The EPOCH Movement

A turning point. A new era. A blueprint for transforming the lives of Nigerian students through principled, purposeful leadership.

EPOCH /ˈiː.pɒk/

noun — A period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics. A turning point.

This Is Not Just Another Campaign

The National Association of Nigerian Students represents the largest student body on the African continent. Its leadership shapes the destiny of millions of young Nigerians — and yet, for too long, that leadership has been defined by internal rivalries, missed opportunities, and unfulfilled potential.

The EPOCH Movement is a declaration that this moment — right now — is different. It is a turning point in the story of Nigerian student unionism. And turning points demand leaders who are ready to turn with them.

Built on five transformative pillars, the EPOCH Agenda is not a wish list. It is a blueprint — specific, actionable, and grounded in years of real-world student leadership experience.

Empowerment

Equipping students to thrive beyond the classroom.

Empowerment

The EPOCH Movement believes that a university degree alone is no longer sufficient in today's rapidly evolving economy. Under the Empowerment pillar, our administration will:

  • Create structured platforms for student economic empowerment through skill acquisition programs in technology, creative arts, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
  • Establish partnerships with private sector organizations to provide funded training, internships, and startup support for student entrepreneurs.
  • Advocate for the establishment of Student Empowerment Desks in all 36 states, serving as resource centers for students seeking economic opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Federal Government's youth empowerment agencies (NYSC, BOI, NIRSAL, etc.) to create direct pipelines for student participation in national empowerment schemes.
  • Launch the NANS Digital Skills Initiative — a structured program to equip students with in-demand digital competencies including coding, graphic design, digital marketing, and data analysis.

Every Nigerian student must leave campus not just with a certificate, but with the capacity to create value in the real world.

Year 1 Action Plan

Within the first year of the EPOCH presidency, concrete steps will be taken to deliver on Empowerment:

  • Launch the NANS Digital Skills Initiative across 36 states
  • Establish Student Empowerment Desks in all geopolitical zones
  • Sign MoUs with 5+ private sector partners for student internships
  • Engage BOI and NIRSAL for student-specific funding windows
  • Host the inaugural NANS Entrepreneurship Summit

Progress

Demanding better — for every campus, every student.

Progress

Progress in Nigerian education has been painfully slow. Dilapidated infrastructure, underfunded universities, overcrowded lecture halls — these are symptoms of systemic neglect that NANS must confront head-on. Under the Progress pillar, our administration will:

  • Pursue aggressive, sustained advocacy for the full implementation of the 26% UNESCO education funding benchmark in Nigeria's annual budget.
  • Hold university managements and the Federal Government accountable through coordinated, strategic protests, legal actions, and media campaigns.
  • Establish a NANS Campus Infrastructure Watch — a monitoring body that tracks and publicly reports on the state of infrastructure across Nigerian campuses.
  • Engage the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) directly to advocate for faster and more equitable distribution of intervention funds.
  • Campaign for improved student welfare: better hostel conditions, functional health centers, reliable power supply, and safe campus environments.
  • Advocate for the review and proper implementation of the Student Loan Act to ensure genuine financial access for students from low-income backgrounds.

Progress is not a gift — it is a demand. And we will demand it relentlessly.

Year 1 Action Plan

Within the first year of the EPOCH presidency, concrete steps will be taken to deliver on Progress:

  • Submit formal demand to FG for 26% education budget allocation
  • Launch NANS Campus Infrastructure Watch monitoring body
  • Engage TETFund directly on equitable fund distribution
  • Campaign for full implementation of the Student Loan Act
  • Publish first NANS Annual Campus Conditions Report

Opportunity

Opening doors that talent alone cannot unlock.

Opportunity

Too many Nigerian students graduate into a world of closed doors. The Opportunity pillar of the EPOCH agenda is about opening those doors — systematically, equitably, and sustainably. Our administration will:

  • Establish a NANS Scholarship Clearinghouse — a centralized database of local and international scholarship opportunities, made freely accessible to all students.
  • Create formal partnerships with multinational corporations, NGOs, and development agencies to provide structured internship and employment pipelines for NANS members.
  • Advocate for the expansion of student exchange programs between Nigerian universities and institutions in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
  • Launch the NANS Mentorship Network — connecting current students with accomplished alumni across various sectors for career guidance and professional development.
  • Engage NYIF, BOI, and other funding bodies to create NANS-specific grant windows for student-led businesses and social enterprises.
  • Partner with tech companies to provide discounted or free access to global learning platforms (Coursera, edX, LinkedIn Learning) for verified NANS members.

Opportunity should not be a function of who you know. Under the EPOCH administration, it will be a function of who you are — a Nigerian student.

Year 1 Action Plan

Within the first year of the EPOCH presidency, concrete steps will be taken to deliver on Opportunity:

  • Launch the NANS Scholarship Clearinghouse database
  • Establish the NANS Mentorship Network with 100+ alumni mentors
  • Sign exchange program agreements with 3+ African universities
  • Partner with 2+ tech companies for free learning platform access
  • Create NANS-specific grant windows with NYIF and BOI

Collaboration

Unity is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

Collaboration

No association can serve its members effectively when it is divided against itself. The history of NANS has been marred by factionalism, internal crises, and leadership disputes that have weakened its voice and credibility. The Collaboration pillar commits our administration to rebuilding unity from within. We will:

  • Prioritize genuine reconciliation among all factions and tendencies within NANS, through inclusive dialogue, transparent processes, and respect for constitutional due process.
  • Establish a NANS Peace and Reconciliation Committee — a standing body to mediate internal disputes and prevent crises before they escalate.
  • Build structured, respectful relationships with all geopolitical zones, ensuring that no zone feels marginalized or excluded from the leadership and benefits of NANS.
  • Strengthen collaboration with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NANS' sister associations, and other civil society organizations for joint advocacy.
  • Engage constructively with the Federal Ministry of Education, NUC, JAMB, WAEC, and other regulatory bodies — not as adversaries, but as partners in education.
  • Promote inter-campus exchanges, cultural programs, and joint student activities that build solidarity across institutional and state boundaries.

A NANS that is united internally is a NANS that is unstoppable externally.

Year 1 Action Plan

Within the first year of the EPOCH presidency, concrete steps will be taken to deliver on Collaboration:

  • Establish the NANS Peace and Reconciliation Committee
  • Hold an All-Zones Stakeholders Summit within first 60 days
  • Sign formal collaboration MoU with ASUU and sister associations
  • Create structured quarterly engagement with FME and NUC
  • Launch Inter-Campus Exchange and Solidarity Programs

Human Capacity

The best legacy a leader leaves is who they raised.

Human Capacity

Leadership is not a destination — it is a pipeline. The Human Capacity Development pillar of the EPOCH agenda is about investing in people — the next generation of student leaders, the current student body, and the communities our students come from. Our administration will:

  • Establish the NANS Leadership Academy — a structured, semester-based program for training emerging student leaders in governance, advocacy, negotiation, and strategic communication.
  • Create a NANS Fellows Program — selecting outstanding student leaders from across all zones for intensive mentorship by seasoned alumni in public service, academia, and the private sector.
  • Launch NANS Campus Health Advocacy — working with the MLSCN, NMA, and relevant bodies to improve access to quality healthcare on campuses, including mental health support.
  • Promote civic education and political awareness among students — equipping them to be engaged, informed citizens who hold leadership accountable beyond campus.
  • Create a NANS Women in Leadership Initiative — ensuring that female student leaders have structured platforms, mentorship, and opportunities to rise within the student movement.
  • Document and archive the history of NANS leadership — creating an institutional memory that future leaders can learn from and build upon.

The greatest legacy any leader can leave is not what they built, but who they raised. Under EPOCH, we will raise a generation.

Year 1 Action Plan

Within the first year of the EPOCH presidency, concrete steps will be taken to deliver on Human Capacity:

  • Launch the NANS Leadership Academy (first cohort of 100 leaders)
  • Establish the NANS Fellows Program with 6-zone representation
  • Launch NANS Campus Mental Health Advocacy Campaign
  • Create the NANS Women in Leadership Initiative
  • Publish first NANS Leadership History & Archive
